How to transition your pet to raw food

If your pet has been on diet of dry kibble and/or processed wet food, it’s important to transition gradually to raw feeding as a complete balanced meal.*

Raw food is digested differently to processed food.

Transitioning too quickly to
raw feeding can cause stomach upset.

Similarly, if your pet is used to dry kibble or canned food, they may be fussy with raw food at first, so gradually introducing raw food will help their taste buds adjust.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Begin by mixing 20% Frontier Pets Raw Freeze-Dried food with 80% of your pet's regular food.
  2. Feed this 20/80 mix for 2-4 days.
  3. If your pet handles the new food well with no issues, increase the ratio to 40% Frontier Pets and 60% regular food for the next 2-4 days.
  4. Gradually increase the proportion of Frontier Pets by 20% every 2-4 days until you're feeding 100% Frontier Pets as a complete balanced meal.
This is a guide only following general Vet advice for transitioning to raw feeding. However, every pet is unique, and they may transition at a different pace. If you have any concerns, contact us or consult your Vet or Animal Health Specialist.

*Frontier Pets Freeze-Dried Raw Pet Food can be used as a complete balanced meal for 100% raw feeding, or as a meal topper for a raw nutrient boost to their usual meals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I transition my pet to a raw food diet?

Transitioning to a raw food diet should be done gradually to avoid digestive upset. Start by mixing a small amount of raw food with your pet’s current food, using a ratio of about 25% raw to 75% existing food. Over 7–10 days, slowly increase the proportion of raw food while reducing the old food until your pet is fully transitioned. Monitor your pet’s digestion and energy levels during the process, and adjust as needed.

What should I expect when transitioning my pet to raw food?

When transitioning to raw food, it’s common to see some changes in your pet’s digestion and stool consistency as their system adjusts. Positive changes, such as improved energy, a shinier coat, and smaller, less odorous stools, often appear within a few weeks. However, if your pet shows signs of persistent diarrhoea or discomfort, slow the transition and consult your veterinarian for advice.

Are there any tips to make transitioning to raw food easier?

Yes, to make the transition smoother:

  • Begin with a single protein source to minimise the risk of digestive issues.
  • Ensure the raw food is balanced and formulated to meet your pet’s nutritional needs.
  • Serve the raw food at room temperature to make it more palatable.

Stick to a consistent feeding schedule and provide plenty of fresh water. At Frontier Pets, our freeze-dried raw food is easy to prepare and perfect for transitioning, offering convenience and high-quality nutrition for your pet.
