Frequently Asked Questions
Kangaroo dog meat is a highly recommended, lean, and novel protein source, especially beneficial for dogs with food allergies or sensitivities due to its limited prior exposure.
It's packed with essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins, and is lower in fat than many common meats. This makes it a healthy and easily digestible option, particularly for dogs needing a novel protein for allergy management or a leaner diet.
Often, yes. Because kangaroo meat for dogs is not a typical ingredient in most commercial dog foods, it frequently serves as a beneficial novel protein source for dogs experiencing allergies or sensitivities to more common proteins like chicken, lamb, or beef.
This limited prior exposure minimizes the likelihood of triggering an immune response, making it a valuable alternative for elimination diets and long-term management of food-related issues.
Generally, yes, most dogs can eat kangaroo dog food, and it can be particularly beneficial for those with specific dietary needs. Its novel protein nature makes it an excellent choice for dogs with allergies or sensitivities to common proteins, often used effectively in elimination diets to identify food triggers.
Furthermore, the high protein and low fat content of kangaroo meat can be advantageous for active dogs needing lean muscle support and for overweight dogs requiring a lower-calorie option to aid in weight management. However, as with any dietary change, it's always wise to introduce new foods gradually and monitor your dog for any individual reactions.
Addressing the ethical considerations of feeding dogs kangaroo meat involves acknowledging the ecological context in Australia. Due to factors like increased arable land and the removal of natural predators since European settlement, kangaroo populations have surged, leading to overgrazing and insufficient food supplies, particularly exacerbated by ongoing drought conditions.
This overpopulation poses a significant threat to Australia's native biodiversity, with many kangaroos sadly dying from starvation. Organisations like Australian Farmers and ecologists advocate for the sustainable harvesting of kangaroos by accredited hunters as a practical and more humane solution. Rather than allowing kangaroos to suffer and die due to lack of resources, a regulated system helps manage populations, keeps remaining animals healthier, and utilises a naturally sourced, free-range, and organic protein free from human intervention, antibiotics, or added hormones, ultimately presenting a responsible approach to a challenging environmental issue.
“Ethically harvesting them with accredited hunters while they are still healthy rather than putting them down when they are already suffering and ruining the environment is the best way forward,” - Ecologist John Read.
Kangaroo meat stands out as a sustainable option for your dog due to several interconnected factors. In many parts of Australia, kangaroo populations have risen to unsustainable levels, driven by increased arable land, artificial watering points, and a reduction in natural predators. This overpopulation leads to significant environmental challenges, including overgrazing, which threatens native biodiversity and can result in kangaroos dying from starvation due to insufficient food resources, particularly during drought conditions.
The commercial harvesting of kangaroos is conducted under strict government regulations and management plans that aim to control these populations, preventing ecological damage and promoting the health of the remaining kangaroo population. These plans include conservative harvest quotas based on population monitoring.
Kangaroo meat for dog food is primarily sourced through government-sanctioned culls of wild kangaroo populations in Australia. These culls are implemented to manage kangaroo numbers and mitigate ecological impacts like overgrazing, particularly during drought conditions. Licensed hunters are required to adhere to strict guidelines outlined in the "National Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and Wallabies."
The meat undergos inspection to ensure it meets food safety regulations and is fit for consumption, whether for human or pet food. These facilities operate under hygiene standards, and the meat is subject to quality control measures before being processed into dog food.
No, the main species of kangaroos (red, eastern grey, western grey, and antilopine) that are used in meat production are not endangered. In fact, their populations are generally abundant across Australia and are classified as "Least Concern" by conservation organisations. In some areas, their numbers have increased to a point where management is necessary to prevent ecological damage from overgrazing, especially during drought conditions.
We understand that the ethical sourcing of our ingredients is a top priority for you, and it is for us too. The kangaroo meat in our dog food comes from populations managed under strict Australian government regulations designed to ensure environmental sustainability and, importantly, humane treatment.
Licensed and trained harvesters adhere to a National Code of Practice. While we acknowledge that animal welfare in any harvesting system is a valid consideration, this regulated approach, with its focus on minimising suffering and managing populations for ecological balance, provides a framework for ethical sourcing. We are committed to working with suppliers who adhere to these high standards and prioritise the well-being of the animals.
All kangaroo meat, including what goes into our premium dog food, is sourced exclusively from wild populations living in their natural habitat across Australia. These kangaroos are harvested, or culled, under stringent regulations and quotas set by the Australian government.
These measures are in place to manage kangaroo populations, particularly in areas where they may be overabundant and impacting the environment. This means the kangaroo in our food has lived a completely free-range and natural life, feeding on native vegetation without any human intervention in their upbringing.
Kangaroo meat for dogs is not only lean but also exceptionally rich in vital nutrients for your dog's health. It boasts significantly higher levels of Vitamin B12—containing twice the amount found in many other common meats—which is crucial for nerve function and red blood cell production.
Furthermore, kangaroo meat is a valuable source of Omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats are known to support cardiovascular health, contribute to a shiny and healthy coat, and can have anti-inflammatory benefits for your dog. This combination of leanness and high nutrient density makes kangaroo a superior protein option for supporting your dog's overall well-being.
Frontier Pets added kangaroo dog food to our range for a few compelling reasons. Its novel protein composition makes it an excellent choice for dogs with food sensitivities, often proving suitable for those allergic to more common proteins. Furthermore, kangaroo meat is naturally lean and packed with essential nutrients, offering significant health benefits.
This new recipe provides valuable variety for picky eaters and dogs with specific dietary requirements, and importantly, directly addresses the strong and consistent requests we've received from our valued customer community.
