Health
There are a number of health issues that your pet may experience during their lifetime. Some are particular to breeds (and you'll know this as an owner) and some 'just seem to happen'.
Our resident vet and animal nutritionist, Dr Kathy Cornack, has reviewed the most common health issues below. They may help you to understand how these affect your pet and whether Frontier Pet food is the solution for you.
Frontier Pets cat food is a biologically appropriate, complete, and balanced diet.
Frontier covers all your cats’ nutritional needs, providing them with 100% complete and balanced nutrition. You don’t need to add anything else, perhaps just a freeze-dried chicken neck for dental health and a bucket load of love!
Cats are obligate carnivores which means they must eat meat; Frontier is chock full of meaty goodness! With none of the added carbs and fillers that can contribute to a range of health issues.
The healthy adult body weight for a cat is between 3-7 kg, obese cats can get up to 12kg.
Obesity is caused by excessive, long term, over consumption of too many calories, inappropriate diet and inadequate exercise. A lack of enrichment (eating out of boredom) and owners showing too much love through food can also contribute.
Once a cat has started to become overweight, they can spiral towards obesity, so early prevention is key! Feed Frontier Pets cat food, give your cat plenty of exercise and provide other interests for stimulation. We want our precious cats to have a healthy relationship with food.
Enrichment toys that rely on prey drives and curiosity are a great tool.
Cats will preferably be eating small amounts 3-4 times daily. A common mistake cat owners make is leaving food down continuously. Offer for five minutes and then take up again if it has not been eaten.
Too much food is not healthy – consider how else you can express our love for our kitty without overfeeding them?
Diabetes is common in middle aged and older cats. It is probably caused by inappropriately high levels of carbs that are in most commercial cat foods.
Symptoms can include being excessively thirsty, which leads to drinking and urinating a lot. Take your precious kitty to the vet to get them checked if you see any of these signs.
They may also have weight loss despite keeping a strong appetite. If your overweight cat starts to lose weight despite eating the same amounts, it is a good idea to get them tested for diabetes.
Untreated diabetes is life threatening, veterinary attention is required for this disease, your cat will need to be stabilised on insulin.
Frontier Pets cat food should aid in the prevention of diabetes due to the very low carb content. For a diagnosed diabetic cat, Frontier Pets cat food can be a very healthy diet but you must also have veterinary supervision after diagnosis and any diet changes must be done slowly, following your vets advice.
Kidney disease is very common, and a vast majority of older cats will die with some degree of kidney failure.
Symptoms can include drinking a lot and peeing a lot. They may also lose weight and vomit.
It is likely that high levels of carbs and low levels of protein and fats are implicated in the epidemic of kidney disease seen in the domesticated feline. These high carbohydrate diets are not a biologically appropriate diet for an obligate carnivore.
There are four levels of kidney disease from mild to severe and your kitty must see a veterinarian for diagnosis and advice on an appropriate diet. By the time they have severe disease they will need a protein restricted diet. Protein restriction in early stages and the benefits of this is controversial.
We believe feeding a biologically appropriate, high protein diet to healthy cats may aid in prevention of this disease.
Hyperthyroidism (Thyroid overactive) is common in older cats.
Symptoms include being quite thin and losing weight despite a strong appetite; A consistently elevated heart rate (200 bpm); They also may be yowling frequently, very restless, and unable to settle at night; Maybe hot and thirsty.
This is a chronic illness and vet attention is required to manage it.
Cats with hyperthyroidism will need to limit their iodine intake and avoid fish and fish blends. Any other protein is fine.
If your cat has blood in their urine, frequent, small amounts of urination, or they seem to be straining or in pain when peeing you will need to get them checked for a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection).
UTI’s are very common in cats so it is especially important that they stay well hydrated. They can also be stress related. It is important to address any stressors that may contribute. For instance, cats may be prone during the spring and autumn breeding seasons when outdoor cats start to prowl around looking for action of a sexual kind.
Dry foods may also predispose cats to UTI’s so we recommend feeding Frontier Pets cat food with water. A dilute urine, from adequate water intake, helps to prevent UTI’s and crystals in the urine.
Cancers are common in cats, as in all species, and there are many causes and types of cancer that cats can have.
One of the best ways to help prevent it is feeding a low carb, biologically appropriate food like Frontier Pets cat food.
It is super important to keep your cat well hydrated, especially as they are prone to UTI’s. Their urine should be a nice pale yellow colour. If their urine is too concentrated ie: dark yellow, then they likely have a UTI.
Cats prefer fresh, moving water so consider a cat drinking fountain or leaving your tap running a little longer so they can have a drink!
We highly recommend feeding Frontier Pets cat food with water added for most meals. Always have fresh water available for cats to enjoy during the day.
It is particularly important to groom long haired cats and make sure they do not have knots.
If a cat that was previously grooming itself well is suddenly not – please check with your vet as this may be a sign of arthritis.
Over grooming: Cats spend a significant proportion of their waking hours grooming. They are fastidious groomers and this is normal. If they are over grooming to the point of taking hair off and creating patches, it could be a sign of other problems like flea allergies or behavioural distress.
Cats immune system can be improved over time to reduce hypersensitivity reactions. Changing died from heavily processed, to one that promotes gut health and reduces inflammation can assist greatly.
Arthritis is very common in older cats. Symptoms of arthritis can include:
- Being reluctant to jump up.
- Lying around and being less active/playful.
- Stiffness.
- They may have pain and be grumpy.
- Poor grooming and knots – grooming only the front end where they can reach easily.
Your cat will need to see a vet for diagnosis and a care plan.
Treat arthritis in your cat as you would for a human by addressing their pain, sourcing supplements to reduce inflammation and improve joint health, weight loss if needed and environmental modification ie: ramps or strategic positioning of furniture to make it easy for them to get up high which they typically love.
A good diet of biologically appropriate food and adequate daily exercise while cats are younger will assist in prevention of arthritis.
Skin issues are quite common in cats and perhaps the most common are Flea allergy dermatitis (Hypersensitivity reaction to flea bite), and over grooming.
Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) makes most cats intensely itchy: biting and scratching, red skin with raised lumps, hair loss or broken hairs. You may see fleas or their poo (flea dirt). Only one flea is enough to cause itching in some cats. Typically affected areas are the neck and back.
FAD is recurrent and seasonal (worse in humid, hot weather when the fleas are most active). Controlling fleas is paramount. A diet change from processed food onto Frontier Pets cat food is a great prevention tool. High levels of fat and protein in the diet help to strengthen your cat's immune system, reduce their hypersensitivity reaction, and keep the skin and coast healthy and glossy.
Dental disease is complex with many causes. Processed and biologically inappropriate foods have likely contributed to a rise in dental disease seen in cats.
One of the reasons for this is likely the over consumption of carbs contributing to plaque build-up – Frontier Pets cat food is as close as you can get to a natural, biologically appropriate diet which may aid in good dental hygiene.
Cats, dogs and humans regularly need to remove plaque off their teeth. This can be done by tooth brushing or by regularly eating hard objects that require a lot of chewing. Chicken necks are fantastic for teeth cleaning and enrichment feeding! Kibble (dry food) is NOT.
FORL’s is a disease of cats where the immune system attacks teeth and puts holes in them. Signs can include dental pain, expressed as crankiness, pain around the head and difficulty eating. Frontier Pets cat food may help to prevent this by potentially optimising the immune system.
